brooklyn heights bathroom

crisp lines

a brooklyn heights brownstone home is given a fun new bathroom that is both simple in its use of materials but with unexpected use of pattern found in the wallpaper and the Italian floor tiles.

skewing the traditional

striped wallpaper has been used horizontally to avoid looking too traditional. As we were unable to recess a medicine cabinet over the vanity, we added a shallow cabinet on the left side and another tall recessed cabinet below the chair rail on the wall behind the door for much needed storage space. Now, all bottles and containers are organized neatly and put out of sight.

a distinctive colour palette

steering away from the obvious all white or grey colour schemes that are so numerous today, we created a palette of sky blue, white and chestnut red-brown with accents of polished nickel; an intriguing combination for a unique effect.

tradition marries contemporary

white frosted glass tile in a contemporary stacked design with the frameless glass shower doors add a modern, contemporary edge to the more traditional feel of a striped wallcovering; although by applying horizontally, this too creates a more modern and interesting feel. Our clients’ eclectic style uses handcrafted hardware made in the US, tiles from Italy and various accessories from England.

before

Our clients were ready to replace an outdated bathroom without altering the plumbing or major electrical lines. Being unable to predict what we would discover upon opening up the walls, as is so often the case with older homes, it was challenging to solidify a concrete design; we needed to keep a somewhat fluid approach. Putting on our creative hats we used dilemmas we encountered as a way to further develop our design ideas and concepts and have fun doing so.
